Been there, done that, no real desire to go back
if you enjoy being hassled by the locals trying to sell you crap, braid your hair, sell you weed then it's the place to go.
we went to Ocho Rios, did Dunns River Falls, toured the Blue Mountian coffee plantation (best part of the visit) and the Appleton Rum distillary.
the abject poverty really bothered me, as well as the agressive street vendors.
reminded me a lot of the Bahamas, but much more scary. we went during the weeks prior to elections, and there was a lot of violence. we flew into Montego Bay and took a shuttle to Ocho Rios. a different shuttle headed towards Negril was hijacked and the driver and a couple of tourists were killed, the rest robbed.
i would never take kids there!
out of all the places in the Caribean i've been, the british and american virgin islands were the best, closely followed by Aruba.
