Are you guys going? How fun! I've always wanted to go there but haven't gotten there yet.

I've seen photos of one place that looks like a lot of fun. It is like a natural "water slide"; a downhill shallow river that you go down on your butt. I think it is in Negril but I'm not positive.

I also know that the locals will try to be "very helpful". Carry your bags through the airport, "help" you get into a particular club or restaurant, etc. Once you give an inch, they will take a mile and they are attached to your hip for the rest of your trip.

To predict the behavior of ordinary people in advance, you only have to assume that they will always try to escape a disagreeable situation with the smallest possible expenditure of intelligence.

Been there, done that, no real desire to go back

if you enjoy being hassled by the locals trying to sell you crap, braid your hair, sell you weed then it's the place to go.

we went to Ocho Rios, did Dunns River Falls, toured the Blue Mountian coffee plantation (best part of the visit) and the Appleton Rum distillary.
the abject poverty really bothered me, as well as the agressive street vendors.
reminded me a lot of the Bahamas, but much more scary. we went during the weeks prior to elections, and there was a lot of violence. we flew into Montego Bay and took a shuttle to Ocho Rios. a different shuttle headed towards Negril was hijacked and the driver and a couple of tourists were killed, the rest robbed.
i would never take kids there!
out of all the places in the Caribean i've been, the british and american virgin islands were the best, closely followed by Aruba.

i want to cruise the inside passage in Alaska next.

Jamaica is a dangerous place. You take your life in your hands to go off the Hotel property on your own.

Of all the Islands I loved the Cayman Islands.

We went when I turned thirty. We stayed at the Super Clubs Hedonism III. Which was something else........

It was super all-inclusive so we mostly stayed at the resort. We were going to go to Dunn's Falls, however after seeing many coming back from there with big cuts on their legs and on crutches we decided to pass.

From what they told us it is not very safe to venture off on your own. We did take a bus one day out to do some shopping. But on the most part we stayed at the resort. There was many activities at the resort like windsurfing, waterskiing, snorkeling, kayaking, scuba diving, tennis etc...

At night they had a toga party one night, a pajama party another night, body painting, things like that.

I would rather go to the Bahamas. There we were able to venture off on our own. We rented a scooter and toured the island, went to the Aquariam, and they had casinos and lots of clubs. We had a blast there.

My one and only trip to Jamaica was back in the late 80's, that was one of ship's stops. Snuck off the main tour for a little trip into the mountains and stopped to eat "Jerk" at one of the roadside stands.

Spent the last three days of the cruise in the cabin getting rid of "La Grippe"!
