Scientists have discovered a way to test small amounts of sewer water for both legal and illegal drugs.

"It's a community urinalysis," said Caleb Banta-Green, a University of Washington drug abuse researcher who was part of the Oregon State team. The scientists presented their results Tuesday at a meeting of the American Chemical Society in Boston.

Two federal agencies have taken samples from U.S. waterways to see if drug testing a whole city is doable, but they haven't gotten as far as the Oregon researchers.

Perhaps the largest shock of their findings:

The ingredient Americans consume and excrete the most was caffeine, Field said.

i'm somewhat amused. one of my brothers is the super..waste water/potable water plant in NW Ark. they monitor all feeder lines to the sewerage treatment plants. the bacterial content must stay stable for proper 'digestion' of the waste. they had a problem recently, due to meth labs dumping bacterial killing substances down the drain, and strangely enough, an increase in sugars in the discharge. i guess as we grow more obese, we develop diabetes, which in turn affects our effluent to be more saturated with sugars than our current pollution control methods can not control.


amazing what our pee and poop can mess up a sewerage treatment plant!
